The Underdrawing

The scaffolding left visible. A work that refuses to hide its own construction — the grid, the guide marks, the structure that every finished image is built to conceal.

A measured grid with one cell brought forward

Every representational image sits on a hidden armature: the grid that keeps proportion honest, the construction lines that no one is meant to see. The Underdrawing promotes that scaffolding to the subject.

It belongs to the same instinct as the essays — a suspicion that the structure is more interesting than the surface it was built to support.
